From the Principal's Desk

Dear Park Avenue Family,

We are thrilled to improve our report card grade from the NM State Public Education Department to a B. We want to continue this improvement and become an A school next year. We need your help, please make sure your students read every night and complete any work they may have missed or were assigned. You are a vital partner in our journey to ensure your child is a success academically. We appreciate all you do to ensure your child is on time to school too, as this is vital in their success.

On September 21st please come by the library beginning at 7:30am and meet our administrative team. We will have coffee and snacks. If you can’t make it please come by the office sometime and introduce yourself. In October we will have a family night with Frito pie, bingo, and other academic games. We want to get to know you better so please look for the October newsletter for dates and times.

On September 14th you will receive your child’s progress report, please take a few minutes to talk to your child about those areas of strength and areas of struggle. Ask questions such as:

·  What makes this subject easy for you?

·  What types of lessons does your teacher present and how do these help you learn?

·  What activities do you believe help you learn?

The Leader in Me

We realize our schools should not merely be focused on improving academics, but should provide opportunities for students to develop their full potential in the following areas:

Leadership* Responsibility*Adaptability*Communication*Initiative* Self-Direction*Creativity*Teamwork*Accountability*Problem Solving*Cross-Cultural Skills

We want to get our school community involved so please look for monthly updates on how students are becoming leaders in their classrooms and across campus.

Every Day Counts!

Park Avenue continues to promote the value of learning! Research shows that attendance is one of the most important factors in school success. Our day begins promptly at 8:00 and ends at 3:00pm. Absences and tardiness interrupt the educational process in the classroom. If a student is tardy ten minutes daily, 30 hours of instruction is missed over the course of a school year. Students can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what's most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher, and the thinking that makes learning come alive!

We at Park Avenue understand that at times life gets in the way; family emergencies and health maladies never wait until Saturday. Our truancy policy wants to ensure that learning continues when students have to miss school. Please notify our school when your child is absent and arrange for make-up work to be picked up and then completed by your child. We continue to have fewer students absent each month because we all work together!

Student Drop-Off and Pick-ups is on Hartman Place

When dropping off or picking up your child on Hartman St. please completely pull over to the curb so traffic can continue to flow. Please do not stop on the crosswalk, this endangers our students. Students are only to cross with the crossing guard on duty. Please follow the school zone speed limit.

Thank you

BUS BEHAVIOR

At Park Avenue we are trying to promote good bus behavior. Each day that passes with zero bus write-ups a picture will be added to the bus poster hanging in the cafeteria. When 20 pictures are added all students receive an additional 15 minute recess.

From the Health Office...

Remember if your child has temperature over 100 or is vomiting please keep your child home. Due to so many illnesses going around, we are requiring students to be fever/vomit free for 24 hours before returning to school if they are ill. Tylenol or Motrin can reduce the fever but the child is still ill even with these administered.

Each semester parents can call/email and excuse their child for  five times without a Doctor’s note after this please attain a Doctor’s note to ensure the child’s absence is excused. In extenuating circumstances please call and talk with the Principal, Ms. Fernandez.

Much Thanks!!

Box Tops

Let’s keep turning the Box Tops in to your teacher!!!! This will directly benefit Park Avenue!

School success depends on excellent attendance

For your child to get the most out of school, they need to be there-- and on time! Research shows that missing 10 percent or more of school days hurts success. To prevent absenteeism:

  • Stick to a schedule. Maintain routines.
  • Schedule carefully. Make appointments during non-school hours.
  • Seek help when needed. If you family struggles with transportation, childcare or other issues, talk with school staff.
